Mediterranean Burger

Mediterranean Burger

All the goodness of a gyro found in a burger!

Serves 6-8

Ingredients:

2 lbs lean ground beef

6 oz feta cheese

1 tbsp dried basil

2 tbsp fresh chopped parsley

1 tbsp garlic powder

Salt and pepper (to taste)

For Tzatzki Sauce:

1 large cucumber (peeled and grated)

1 pint Greek yogurt

1 tbsp red wine vinegar

2 tbsp chopped dill

1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil

4 cloves garlic (chopped and mashed into paste)

Salt and pepper (to taste)

Other ingredients:

Pita bread

2 tomatoes (sliced)

1 head red leaf lettuce (cut into pieces)

Red Onion (sliced; optional)

Directions:

  1. Combine all ingredients for Tzatzki sauce.  Mix well until oil is fully emulsified.  Refrigerate for at least 2 hours to allow flavors to infuse.
  2. Combine beef, cheese, and seasonings.  Separate meat into 6-8 equal parts.  Form patties into half moon shape to fit half size of pita bread.
  3. Heat grill or griddle to high.  Grill patties to desired doneness; typically 4-5 minutes per side for ½ inch thick patties. Let meat rest for 5-10 minutes.
  4. Warm pita bread on each side on a medium skillet until pliable.
  5. On one side of pita, place lettuce, then patty, then tzatzki, tomato, onion, and cucumber.  Fold over other half. Enjoy!
